The Leonard Butch Robertson Men’s Rugby Endowment was established by Dr. John K. Shaw, captain of the 1986 team, with a goal for it to grow and ensure long-term stability of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Men’s Rugby Club. This endowment is a tribute to the Old Boys and everyone who has shaped the club’s enduring spirit. What sets this apart from other rugby support options is that funds given to the endowment are continually invested for the life of the University with the interest income designated to financially support the coaching and administrative leadership indefinitely. Once this piece is in place, additional gifts to the non-endowed funds will continue to provide student scholarship and cover other expenses for the club.
This VolStarter opportunity is part of an active campaign to seek new donors to the endowment and to build upon current endowment giving. There are other options both internally and externally that support the Rugby Club, but this endowment is the current focus with the goal outlined above. Founded in 1970, the Rugby Club has built a proud, 50-year legacy under the leadership of coaches Butch Robertson and Marty Bradley. With numerous conference championships, national tournament appearances, All-Conference selections, nine All-Americans, and three US Eagles, the club is recognized as one of the premier collegiate rugby programs in the nation.
